John Andrew Beane has spent nearly forty years building startups. Over the course of his career, he has founded companies, raised capital, built products, hired teams, celebrated acquisitions, survived failures, and learned firsthand that entrepreneurship is rarely as glamorous as it looks from the outside. Today, John is the co-founder and CEO of MemComputing, where he is helping develop a new generation of computing technology for artificial intelligence. Before that, he was part of the founding team for ecoATM, which was acquired by Outerwall for $350 million, and Asteres, a pioneer in automated prescription dispensing. He also held leadership roles at Pyxis Corporation, CardioNow, Bridge Medical, and Zoom Systems. Several of those companies were successfully acquired, including Pyxis, which Cardinal Health purchased for $960 million. An inventor at heart, John holds nineteen U.S. and international patents spanning medical devices, automation, and computing technologies. He has also served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of California, San Diego, mentoring students, researchers, and faculty working to turn promising ideas into successful companies. Confessions of a Startup Junkie is John's first book, but probably not his last. It isn't a playbook or a victory lap. It's a candid account of what happens behind the headlines, when ambition collides with uncertainty, success comes at a cost, and the hardest part isn't starting the next company. It’s deciding not to. John lives in Rancho Santa Fe, California, with his wife, Jennifer. When he isn't building companies or writing, he's usually behind a camera, spending time with his family, or working through a honey-do list that never seems to get any shorter.
